About Scientific-Technical Seminar in Ukraine on LRUCM Project
Traditional methods of ultrasonic testing enable testing a zone of a small area with the dimensions measured in tens of millimeters. This means that testing of large-sized structures such as pipelines, tubular structures, bridge ropes, sleeve parts of off-shore platforms, etc. involves considerable time and financial resources. In addition, these testing techniques require access directly over the entire structure surface. Diagnostics of extended oil- and gas pipelines, railway rails, off-shore platforms, rope bridges, river piles, etc. is performed using the method of long-range low-frequency ultrasonic testing (LRUT). This method is based on application of directed waves, capable of propagating to long distances, which allows detection of corrosion damage at long distances. The term “directed wave” in non-destructive testing means a “wave with a high-frequency mode propagating along plates and pipes”. These waves are characterized by a low attenuation, as during propagation the energy is concentrated between the lower and upper surfaces of the pipe. Non-destructive testing of pipelines by directed waves uses exactly the capacity of these waves to propagate for long distances, thus allowing testing to be performed in the range from several meters up to several hundred meters. Compared to the traditional NDT methods the efficiency of testing by directed waves is tens of times higher and the cost is essentially lower. With the purpose of development of this technology and its introduction into practice 23 scientific organizations from 12 European countries are performing a joint project “Long-range Ultrasonic Condition Monitoring (LRUCM)”, which is included into the 6th Framework program of the European Union. The leading organization of the Consortium is the British Welding Institute. Ukrainian Society for NDT is participant of this project.
USNDT scientific-practical seminars at the International Exhibition Center in 2007
Ukrainian Society for Non-Destructive Testing traditionally holds scientific-practical seminars on urgent problems of non-destructive testing and technical diagnostics at the International Exhibition Center (Kiev).

4-th International Conference on NDT in Greece A wonderful and hospitable country, praised in myths and legends, homeland of the great antique civilization, country of gods and heroes, one of the centers of Christianity, a land, where such a large number of sightseeing objects are concentrated that in order to visit them all you have to come to live there. In this country not only the large and well-known, but even small towns and numerous islands have their monuments of antique and medieval culture, their history full of events, their own legend and myth. He, who has visited here at least once, will for sure remember the unique blue of the sky, soft climate, warm sea, tremendous number of multilingual tourist groups rushing to see the world architecture masterpieces. In this country the 4-th International Conference on NDT was held from October 11 to 14, 2007, and it took place in the birthplace of Zeus – an island, where the Minoan civilization, one of the most ancient civilizations of humanity originated and developed; an island of boundless sea horizons, magnificent sand beaches and purest sea water, an island with majestic mountain landscapes, many kilometer ravines with overhanging rocks and mountain rivers rapidly flowing down below, romantic mountain villages, in some of which the vendetta custom is still followed, and, finally, an island of endless olive groves, where the best in the world olive oil is produced. This country is called Greece, and the island is Crete. This is exactly the venue, to which the Ukrainian Society of Non-Destructive Testing (USNDT) organized the regular foreign trip for Ukrainian NDT specialists for participation in the events held within the framework of the Conference. The 4-th International NDT Conference in Greece was organized by the Hellenic Society for NDT and was held in the city of Chania – the second city of Crete Island in size, a city with buildings in the Byzantine and Turkish style, which has preserved its medieval look. The Conference meetings and the Exhibition were held exactly in the halls of Great Arsenal built in the Venetian epoch (1497). As Conference organizers said, their purpose was to bring together scientists and engineers from different countries of the world and enable them to exchange experience gained in conducting their own research and technological development in NDT field. Alongside the Greek specialists and companies, also representatives from Germany, Great Britain, Austria, Italy, Spain, USA, Bulgaria, Byelorus Republic, Ukraine and other countries participated in the Conference. Altogether about 300 specialists participated in the Conference activities as reporters or participants. 117 oral and poster presentations were made in the Conference, more than half of which were by foreign authors. 20 companies presented their developments and world brand products in the Exhibition of NDT means.
Conference plenary session was opened by Prof. Ioanis Prassianakis, President of the Hellenic Society for NDT, who focused on the importance of NDT at the current stage of society development, but also noted that already the ancient Greeks knew and applied NDT for quality control of the used materials. Then Conference participants listened with interest to the presentation of Dr. Sotiros Vahaviolos, former president of the ASNT, which was devoted to predictions and tendencies in NDT development. After that the Conference activities continued in session meetings, in which presentations in the following directions were made:
Paper abstracts were published in Conference Proceeding, which are available for familiarization at USNDT Secretariat. Exhibition of NDT means which attracted just as much attention of the participants was held simultaneously with the Conference scientific program in the Great Arsenal halls. A.L.Shekero, E.O.Paton Electric Welding Institute of the NAS of Ukraine On cooperation on NDT between Ukraine and Bulgaria The second stage of joint work on research project “Investigation of the methods of discontinuity sizing by diffracted waves” performed by the E.O.Paton Electric Welding Institute of NASU (PWI) and Institute of Mechanics of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was held from October 17 till 30, 2007 at the E.O.Paton Institute. For participation in these investigations PWI was visited by A.Alexiev, Leading Engineer of the Department of Mechanics, Diagnostics and Non-Destructive Testing of the Institute of Mechanics of BAS, Deputy Director of the Center on personnel certification of the Bulgarian Society for NDT . Experimental investigations of ultrasonic wave diffraction in welded joints with model crack were conducted to study the characteristics of diffracted waves formed on crack tips, in order to select the optimum technological parameters for accurate measurement of the depth of crack edge location. The visit program also included familiarization with developments which are conducted at PWI NDT Department, in particular, development of acoustic antennas for excitation of directional waves in pipelines, and developments in the field of UT with application of EMA transducers. An agreement has been signed between the Personnel Certification Center on NDT of the National Scientific-Technical NDT Society of Bulgaria and Certification Center at the Ukrainian Society for NDT. The agreement is aimed at establishing cooperation between the certification bodies of the two Societies in the field of organization and improvement of the process of certification of NDT specialists within the framework of the requirements of EFNDT and national standards on personnel certification. The agreement was signed by Prof. M.Mikhovski, Prof. V.Troitskiy and Dr. Al.Skordiev.
15-th International Conference on NDT in Yalta, Ukraine 15-th International Conference and Exhibition “Modern Methods and Means of Non-Destructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics” was held from October 1 till 5, 2007 in Yalta. A.V.Mozgovoj, Vice-President of the Ukrainian Society for NDT spoke about Society activities in 2007 and plans for 2008.
In the Conference 11 plenary, 55 session and 45 poster presentations were made on the most recent results of research and development in a broad range of problems of NDT, diagnostics and prediction of the residual life of structures; determination of physico-mechanical characteristics of materials, training and certification of NDT specialists, development of advanced and improvement of the existing codes on NDT and other urgent issues. It was generally agreed that the Conference was a success. The Organizing Committee did their best to enable the participants to intensively work for their own benefit, exchange opinions, information, and learn something new. The Conference has its own face, unique in some aspects, and its own traditions, yet every year something changes in it. For instance, this time a whole day was devoted to detailed presentations of developers of new NDT means, methods and technologies. The Conference effectiveness is ensured by the possibility of its participants communicating practically all the time, not only in the sessions, but also after them.
